UK Extends Electronic Travel to European Visitors

The UK government is taking the final significant step in implementing the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for the millions of visitors who enter the country each year. As of today, eligible European travelers can apply for an ETA, which will become mandatory for travel to the UK starting Wednesday, 2 April 2025.

Applying for an ETA is a fast and straightforward process via the UK ETA app, with most applicants receiving instant decisions within minutes. This ensures that spontaneous trips to the UK remain feasible. Alternatively, applications can be submitted through GOV.UK for those without smartphone access.

Applicants are required to provide biographic and biometric information and answer questions regarding their suitability and criminal record. Once approved, the ETA is digitally linked to the applicant’s passport.

Although most applications are processed rapidly, travelers are advised to apply at least three working days in advance to accommodate any cases requiring further review.

An ETA costs £10 and permits multiple visits to the UK for up to six months at a time over a two-year period or until the passport expires—whichever comes first. It is important to note that an ETA is not a visa but a digital travel authorization.
